General Notes
On the Canal Clifton is a rare, early Lowry pastel. Lowry produced a considerable number of pencil drawings but he only did a small number of pastel works. Clifton is a small town within the metropolitan borough of the City of Salford , in Greater Manchester . It lies in the Irwell Valley in the northern part of the City of Salford. Lowry lived nearby in Pendlebury so this was right on his doorstep.
Lowry later produced a number of other works featuring barges, the most famous being an oil painting entitled Coal Barge, Worsley, 1946
