L.S. Lowry in the North East, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, 2010. Illustrated p 67 plate 74.
LS Lowry is famously quoted as saying that Had I not been lonely, none of my work would have happened. I should not have done what I've done, or seen the way I saw things.
He expressed this feeling of loneliness in a number of drawings and paintings, most of which, like this one, were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In these works, he would use a solitary obelisk or island in the middle of the sea to represent the sense of isolation he felt, both as a man and a painter.
