This drawing was produced in one of Adolphe Valette's Life Drawing clasess. Lowry hated being called a self-taught artist, he said:
The main thing, it seems to me, is to let the people know that I was trained. I'm tired of people saying 'You're self-taught aren't you? I'm sick of it. I drew the life class. I did the life drawing for 12 solid years as well as I could and that, I think, is the foundation of painting. I don't think you can teach painting, because everybody's colour sense is different. But drawing: the model's there, and you either get it right or wrong. There's no question of that. If you can draw the life, you can draw anything.
