L.S. Lowry was fascinated by incidents which he saw in the streets of Manchester and Salford and he would often do quick sketches of these events which he would use in future drawings and paintings. This 1923 pencil drawing shows a crowd gathering around someone who has collapsed in the street.
Lowry would revisit this exact subject in his 1936 16 x 20 oil painting, also titled Man Taken Ill. This painting was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in 1946 and has been in their collection ever since.
