Canney's impact as an artist is in many ways secondary to his significance as a broadcaster, writer, curator, lecturer and champion of art, particularly in Cornwall. During his time as Curator of Newlyn Art Gallery he curated some significant exhibitions and promoted a more forward thinking attitude, which led to the Gallery attracting Arts Council funding. He worked in a variety of styles, from traditional landscapes, through Lanyon and landscape influenced abstract works like 'Coast to Coast' to more hard-edged, almost mathematical constructivist pieces later in his career.
